So, who do you guys think will be up for best new artist this year??? I know that they are always a pretty diverse group. And then they always throw in someone I've never heard of. And then the winner is somebody who has already put out like 8 albums. But just for fun, who do you think has a chance???

So far this year, I would say Alicia Keys is a LOCK for a nomination. Indie.Arie and Nelly Furtado also seem like strong choices. Linkin Park is a pretty kickass rock band, so I'd say they have a good shot too. I don't really listen to much other types of music, so I'm not sure if there is a hot new country star or a rapper. I would say of all the ones I have mentioned, Alicia Keys is the frontrunner. She has gotten a lot of buzz, and unlike Indie.Arie, Alicia's album went #1 and so did her first single. That plus the fact that she wrote the music herself and it is soulful and wellwritten, I would say Alicia has the momentum as of now to win this award. I don't think Indie or Nelly have a chance against her. There may be somebody I've never heard of before though. And who knows, maybe Whitney will win the award, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised. When it comes to best new artist, it seems like the grammy people put everyone's name in a hat and draw one. They really don't pay attention to whether or not the artist is actually new or not. Last year's winner was a perfect example. "It only took me 6 albums to get hear." Even she didn't understand why she was up for best new artist.

Alicia is guaranteed a nomination but not a win, the academy knows a thing or two on awarding proper music: Remember Steely Dan, that should help answer my question. Nelly Furtado has the material and artistry BOTH set straight perfectly so she has a good chance. I have said so many times in posts about who I should/think would get nominated and I don't feel like saying it again but I don't think another neo-soul artist like India.Arie will get a nom. cause Jill already did.....

I know right, that was Shelby Lynne and her album was very good. But to the point, isn't that kind of insulting to her to give her that Grammy when it is her 6th album, I wonder if she thought that was insulting her to since all she did was make music again.

I think Alicia may get a nod. for Album Of The Year, and best R&B Song. I think she might clean shop this year. I also see Survivor getting a Best R&B album nod.

What Alicia has over Nelly is the fact that she is black. Honestly, black women who write their own music are looked at as geniuses compared to their white peers who are often just as talented. Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Indie.Arie, and Alicia are all called geniuses and have all this buzz about them. Saran Mclachlin, Jewel, and Nelly Furtado are just as talented, but they don't get the same respect. I think that there is a little bit of racism towards white females in the business these days when it comes to being credited as intelligent. The only white women who get any credit are the ditzy pop stars like Britney and Christina. I think Alicia will get more props for her album than Nelly will, even though Nelly's is just as if not more inventive.

Well, if she was insulted then she CERTAINLY showed the world. She looked like a Macy Gray had just fowled her birthday cake. (OH, SHE PROBABLY DID)

LAST EDITED ON 14-08-01 AT 03:24 PM (EST)[p]I'd personally bet my money on Alicia for the win.
If I had my choice, I'd give it to India all the way. That CD is a gem. What saddens me is that radio will jump all over Alicia's next single, which I think is Girlfried, and the song is utter crap. I can't stand it. It sounds like a poor bootlegged Napster remix.
