We all have those misHEARD lyrics that we've talked about before, but I wanna know what are your misunderstood lyrics? Like songs that were big and catchy when you were a child or younger and you naively sang along because you didn't know what you were singing. Those songs your parents or relatives would tell you to stop singing along to, but would never explain why. I have two. I'll share one now and one later.

The first for me is TLC's "Ain't Too Proud To Beg." I distinctly remember my older cousin and my sister telling me to not sing along to the song at all. Ever. But how could you not? It was SOOOOOO catchy. Fast forward to me being a sophmore in high school and I have that song playing on a mix CD I burned. I stopped MID LYRIC singing along, shocked!!! "Two inches or a yard, rock hard or if it's saggin..." I finally understood WHAT they were singing about--the size of a guy's manhood! And I rode the rest of the way to the school mouth hanging open like, "OMG thats why they didn't want me to sing that!"

Do you have any to share? This thread is gonna be HILARIOUS!

When was your "ah ha" moment when you realized just what you had been singing for so many years?

Ahh yes, we all have these moments! I remembered one of mine right away! It was All For You by Janet Jackson. Mind you, I grew up on a street with only a few houses, I was a pretty sheltered kid. I was about 12 when that song came out and I loved it, but didn't know what it meant. So I walked around the yard playin and singing, "All my girls at the party look at that body shakin that thing like I never did see, GOT A NICE PACKAGE ALRIGHT GUESS I'M GONNA HAVE TO RIDE IT TONIGHT." If only someone was around to tell me what that meant lol.

It was actually some years later when I was in high school and I heard it again and was like, "OMG I know all these words! OMG I WAS SINGING WHATTT?" LMAO!

7th grade... the song came on the radio one afternoon. I remember my siblings would tell me not to sing along, but I did anyway, guess it was hard to convince a 4 year old not to sing about something they dont' understand.

:sweating: :giggle: :giggle:

As for me, I'll tell my most recent experience: Not sure how many people here know gospel music, but about two weeks back, while searching for lyrics to a song, I stumbled upon the lyrics to Healing In His Wings on the same page, which is a song I've sung in church with the choir for years. I looked at the first words: "The name of the Lord shall be feared." Oops. All this time, I've been singing "The name of the Lord shall be filled." Filled. Idiot. That doesn't even make sense! SMH...

Then there's my goddaughter. About three months ago or so, my sister heard her singing the chorus to Rihanna's S&M. This was just before she turned ten years old. So my sis tells me: Uh, your child is singing the words to a song she really shouldn't be singing! Needless to say, we had to put a stop to that. LOL. She obviously didn't know what she was singing about.

Today I heard a song that reminded me of my other misunerstood lyrics. Theres a song called, Bad Moon on the Rise by CCR. I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS thought the lyrics were (for real) "there's a bathroom on the right" instead of "theres a bad moon on the rise". To this day I have trouble saying the real lyrics because of all the years I spent singing it the other way.

I don't recall an English song as such, but I used to sing a Hindi song as a kid called 'Mera pao Bhari Ho Gaya' - which meant 'you've made me pregnant'!! :/

As an aside, my little cousin taught herself Hindi because she was so fascinated with the culture! She speaks it fluently now and has a Persian boyfriend now. I know she's frequently posting on the Bollywhat forums as well.

Hmm I can't think of any misunderstood lyrics right now...misheard I still hear Whitney saying "I want ya babies" instead of "I want to dance" at the start of iwdws. lol

So she got a Persian boyfriend coz she she can speak in Hindi?? lol
But she must be fascinated by it all, because you don't really have to learn Hindi to talk in a Bollywood forum!! What is used in most of the movies itself is a mixture of Hindi and English, popularly known as "Hinglish". :)

No, not cause she can speak in Hindi; because she got so engrossed in the culture that she now only finds Indian men attractive LOL. She is INTRIGUED by the language. I mean she has bought books, learned to write it, speaks it quite fluently, and won't watch any of the movies (even the older stuff) with subtitles.

Let's face it Karan, she might like Indian culture, but when it comes to men, we all know it's all about Middle Eastern men. lol j/k.

I wonder how many Indians can do that! LOL
...especially considering that there are so many different languages spoken from one part to another. The southern people for instance *mostly* don't understand hindi, and have their own regional language, and communicate with the rest of the country through English, mostly. So I think they do use subtitles themselves. LOL
Anyway, you may also suggest your cousin to browse through NORTH Indian men, she'll find better options there!!...just a suggestion... :P lol
