They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway
They say there's always magic in the air
But when your walking down the street
And you hear that whitney beat
You know she's a star and shine's everywhere.
I love you forever whitney!

I never thought RTY would rip my heart out and stomp on it. That made me cry.
I bought the BG today at Target. I needed a new one anyways. I opened it up and put it in my cars banging system. I didn't cry at all and didn't feel that much emotion other than joy hearing that voice echo through my body. When I got home I had tear trails all down my face. I didn't even know I was crying.
I think my soul was cut and scarred February 11 2012. I really mean that. I think I'll be 90 and still crying over this.

Love is what we make it
We can make it something lovely
So don't desert me
Instead, learn to trust me
And love is what we make it
So let's make it, love

Thanks, Pontus. So beautiful to see how much Whitney is revered by these Broadway greats.
Two things come immediately to mind, though, and I know these sentiments have been expressed here before. As huge of a stan as I have always been, I have often compared the lyrics of Whitney's songs to other, what I deemed to be, more mature lyrics. I have sometimes called her lyrics sophomoric. I have done so under the premise of being a so-called "objective" Whitney stan. "Yes, I know her lyrics are trite and sophomoric, but that VOICE," I would say. But listening to those lyrics now...they are so deeply and profoundly meaningful. And Whitney was so amazing at bringing the meaning out. They speak of Whitney's life, personality, triumphs, and struggles. She always said she only sung songs that had meaning for her. If the lyrics to GLOA don't perfectly define who she was as a person, how she lived her life, and how she wanted others to see themselves, then nothing else does.
Secondly, though it was a valiant effort, listening to others attempt to sing her songs - even attempt to make her songs their own - only magnifies their deficiency and Whitney's excellence. It shines a blinding light on Whitney's ability to interpret lyrics in a way that is so natural that maybe we take the lyrics for granted. We think anyone can replicate it or convey the meaning just as well. The last, extended note of "loooooove" at the end of Whitney's GLOA is so clear and full and rich and simple. She does not go high or low but simply sings LOVE, and we have no choice but to believe that LOVE is where we can find our strength. In listening to Kecia Lewis-Evans' interpretation (beautiful and heartfelt as it was), I lost so much of the meaning of the song. She went high on the last note, and suddenly her LOVE didn't hold the certainty of strength that Whitney's always did.
I could critique the performances of the other Broadway stars in a similar fashion. These are professional, Broadway singers and not even they could sing these songs with anything close to the simple, inspired, and genius interpretation skills of Whitney.
I SO enjoy these celebrity tributes. I love seeing who pays homage to Whitney. I will keep watching with interest. Some (Robin Thicke) are much better than others. But each tribute only underlines the indisputable fact that there is no one who can bring it like Whitney. That is why these songs are and will always be Whitney's songs...

I love JHud to death, but even I'm starting to think she needs some serious vocal training. The shouting has got to stop. Whitney's performance of IEW at the Pre Grammy Party in 2009 sounds 100 times better than what she did in that small clip, to be honest.

Mmmhmmm. I'll believe it when I see it. What kind of tribute could she do after all the shade she's thrown? My side-eye is so far to the side that my sockets hurt. Why doesn't she just link herself to a chain of fools and let it clink on down a freeway of hate in a rusted pink Cadillac. I can't wait to hear the excuse she will give for why she is unable to do this "tribute."
I'm willing to forgive you, Aretha, but I can't forget...

Yes I heard it and read it. Shadeful BLEEP! hate-retha needs to step the BLEEP! off. The girl looked up to you and you couldn't even show up to her funeral after the level of success she had (which you wanted) killed her. Now you wanna tribute after you took your leg spasm and hoarse self to the stage to sing that night not even an hour away. WHACK.
Hate-retha. She *EARNED* that BLEEP! Name February 18th.
