[A.Dark Water]

I come from the land of Allentown, Pennsylvania. I have to say, I never really got into Whitney until after her death (yeah, I know that sounds lame). It started when I bought a used 45 RPM vinyl record of "Didn't We Almost Have It All", which I had a soft spot for in the past. After that, I bought "I'm Your Baby Tonight" at K-Mart for 5 or 6 dollars about a week or so later, then I bought "Whitney" while shopping for groceries at Path Mark, and then I just started getting more into her from there. I never realized just how legendary she really is until now. I never cared that much about her music in the past, but now I think she's up there with Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Laura Branigan and several other legendary female singers in that league. It's an honor to be a part of this community!

As a new fan, you should check out the live performances thread. We are talking the greatest live singer EVER. There are lots of great live performances from early in her career, but I love her voice as she grew emotionally. Here're a few to of my favorites get you started:

You won't have access to those features for a little while. There's an orientation type period. It's a security feature.

It's funny this thread is here because I told a friend at work to watch "AMA 1994 Whitney Houston" on Youtube because she's my age (27) and admitted she doesn't know much about Whitney's career. She asked "why they call her the voice" and I said "watch that video and then tell me".

She just texted me asking what to youtube again and I told her. She said she's about to watch it now (As I'm typing this message, lol) I can't wait to hear her reaction.

The sad thing is too many people don't really know about Whitney Houston. They just hear the madness on TV. It's funny how all her videos on YT have thousands of new comments of people in total awe of Whitney's talent.

Whitney Houston shined on stage, not on the record. Her live performances almost ALWAYS make her studio work look weak. Like GLOA on record is not cute compared to GLOA Arista, or Welcome Home Heroes. That's the GLOA I know. LOL Same with ILTY. To this day if I wanna hear that song, I'm youtubing Milan, Rome, Nottingham, Melbourne and so forth from 2010. Now THATS ILTY. lol

I dont mean to hijack this thread but she's texting me back that she's watching like everything she can find right now. She just sent me a text just this second saying "omg I'm falling in love with her"

It just made me cry like really bad. I'm so emotional right now.

Welcome. A. Dark Water. It's never too late to be a fan, you have to start somewhere. Of course it would've been great if more people realized her talent while she was still with us but she's given us a lot to hold on to, so I'm grateful for that. Nice to have you here

Conclue, I'm so happy she's watching those videos! As she will find out, once you watch one, you can't stop, they come one after another and before I know it, I've been on YT for 3 hours.

Hey Conclu, make sure she watches my top 4: AMAs Porgy, OMIT Grammys, MTV WDIHSB, and Natural Woman Brazil. Oh, and SSB, and Loverman Medley, and A QUIET PLACE (my heart stops), and This Day rehearsal, and the entire Nelson Mandela Freedom Fest concert from Wembly, and the entire TPW soundtrack, I don't care if it's not live, etc., etc, etc.

Boy do I envy your friend the opportunity to discover Whitney for the first time. Stops my heart.

Hi! Welcome!

Maaan, I remember discovering her for the first time. That faithful afternoon. That moment I clicked on the very first, completely random, YT video. Turned around and realized it was 5 am. It doesn't get better than that.

Conclu, congratulations on turning another muggle into a fan! I remember I tried that with my best friend when I first discovered her. Poor thing had to watch like 50 videos because I was so excited and had to share it with someone. Unfortunately, I wasn't so successful - she did develop a certain respect for Whitney, but that's about it. Then again, she was never the fan material to begin with, never attached herself to an artist that way, so I like to think it wasn't my fault, I did everything right. Oh, we're not friends anymore. Not because of Whitney, but I guess that was a good sign. Just sayin'.
